She is grating coconut the traditional way, using the ‘kratai’ or ‘rabbit’ grater. It a wooden seat with a grater sticking out of the top. You sit on it and grate the coconut, just like she’s doing. This is what they use to do when one wants coconut cream; now you can get coconut cream in can. One coconut makes about 1 cup of cream, enough for a pot of curry.
Meet Poo Yai Chang. He is dressed in the traditional farmer’s garb. To me, he looks like a ‘poo yai ban’ or village headman, so I named him Poo Yai Chang.
